About the society
Welcome to the South Lebanon Historical Society. We hope you enjoy the artifacts and documents of the history we have found, and we hope to keep passing that history on to the next generations. With the help of friends, family and the community, we can keep it alive.
The oldest town in Warren County
South Lebanon was first known as Deerfield, when it was still part of Hamilton County, Ohio. It was home to active participants in the Underground Railroad and to families whose names still turn up across these pages:
- The Snook family
- The King family of the King Powder Company
- The Wilson family of the Wilson Keg Co.
- The family of General Sutton
- The Amburgy family of Kash's Big Bargain Barn and Holy Land Tours
- The Knights of Pythias, Miami Valley Lodge No. 703
The Old Union Township Building
No other building served the community the way the Old Union Township Building did. Built in the late 1800s, it was at different times the town hall, court, jail, community center, school, church, opera house, firehouse, the Knights of Pythias lodge and the Harrison Art Gallery.
Miami Valley Lodge No. 703 was chartered in 1897 and closed sometime before 1945. (Source: Marty Trent, PGC, Grand Secretary, Grand Lodge of Knights of Pythias of Ohio.)
